Background
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is a specialized
agency of the United Nations (UN) with a mandate to contribute to peace and security, the
building of peace, the eradication of poverty, and sustainable development. UNESCO pursues its
objectives through five major programs: education, natural sciences, social & human sciences,
culture, and communication & information. The UNESCO Office in Accra is currently
implementing activities in all the programme sectors. Most of the interventions are multiyear
duration and are funded from extra budgetary sources, while a few of them are funded from the
Regular Programme sources.
The UNESCO Accra Office seeks a Program Assistant to support the implementation of its Culture
Program.
Direct supervision by: (Programme Specialist for Culture)
The Program Assistant is under the overall authority of the Head of Office and direct supervision
of the (National) Professional Officer for Culture Unit.
Dues and Responsibilies:
– Follow up on the UNESCO Culture Conventions specifically 1970, 1972, 2001, 2003, 2005
and UNIDROIT 1995 Convention on Stolen or Illegally Exported Cultural objects (Rome,
1995), which completes the 1970 Convention concerning the fight against illicit traffic or
cultural property in particular and the protection of Culture heritage at international
level in general;
– Contribute to the maintenance of a database of Cultural and Creative Institutions,
Individuals and Experts in Ghana and assist in supporting the Ghana Culture Policy
Review
– Follow up on the World Heritage International Assistance to prepare management plans
for the Asante Traditional Buildings;
– Contribute to the organization and celebration of selected World Culture Days with
partners and Culture strategies and preparation of work plans;
– Contribute to Culture campaigns through social media strategies and to advocacy efforts
geared towards promoting Culture & development
– and carry out additional tasks that may be required to ensure success of the projects.
Qualification and experience required.
Education:
MSc or M.A in the field of Heritage, Social Sciences, Cultural Studies, Creativity & Design
Technologies; legal studies
Work experience
Preferably 2 years of professional experience in field of cultural management and/or other
similar areas
Skill and competences
Creativity and Innovation, communication, teamwork, technological awareness, building
partnerships.
Expertise with Microsoft office, strong organizational skills and keen attention to detail, ability
to work in a multicultural environment and collaborative manner.
Languages
Excellent knowledge of English is required. Knowledge of French can be an asset.
